RIPLEY residents gather outside the William Birks flats on Wright Avenue – as work begins to redevelop them.

Housing group Futures Homescape, formerly Amber Valley Housing, began the building of nine affordable houses with driveways on Saturday.

The project is due to be finished by April 2012.

In December last year, users of a community centre there were dismayed at plans to see the building knocked down as Futures Homescape had no plans to provide a replacement facility. However Ripley town councillor David Williams is pleased to see more homes available for younger people in the town. He said: “This category of people tend to be on housing waiting lists for a long time.”
