DENBY athlete Jessica Turner saved her best for last as the Amber Valley & Erewash Athletic Club member smashed her personal best in the England Athletics Championships.

Competing in the Under-17 Championships at the Bedford International Stadium, she won a bronze medal in the 300m hurdles.

The 16-year-old ran a customary strong and confident race to finish third in only her first season at this event, having previously been better known as a middle distance runner.

Her time of 43.80 seconds knocks one second off her previous best and propels her to third in the UK national rankings this year.

The final, run in near perfect conditions, was a quality affair with the top three girls all running personal best times and bettering the standards set at previous national standard competitions this year.

Also competing at Bedford were Under-15s Jack Allen and Jethro McGraw who didn’t progress any further than the heats of the 100m and 800m respectively, and Tom Bridge who finished somewhat down on his best in the Under-17 discus and shot.

Meanwhile, AVEAC finished runners-up in the Mini League which was the closest it has been for years.

Both Amber Valley & Erewash AC and Chesterfield DAC were on equal points going into the fourth and final match recently.

Chesterfield proved the strongest on the day to retain the trophy they won in the 2010 season.

Three new Mini League records were set by AVEAC athletes this season by Niamh Emerson U13G High Jump, Jethro McGraw U15B 800m, and the AVEAC U15B 4 x 100m relay team (Jack Allen, George White, Jack Nicholson, Jethro McGraw),

Both Niamh and Jethro received Athlete of the Match awards as outstanding athletes of the season.
