PRIMARY school children have been getting their hands dirty this week in a bid to make their school a brighter place.

To coincide with the Royal Horticultural Society’s national gardening week, each class at Awsworth Primary School grabbed trowels and rakes to spruce up a different part of the school grounds.

With a bit of help from staff and parents, the school now has its own vegetable patches and an orchard of trees to enjoy.

And the piece de resistance is a red, white and blue flower display, which should be blooming in time for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in June.

Deputy headteacher Lynn Cripwell said: “The kids have really enjoyed it – they’ve really made the school a more attractive place.”
