Workers acting to fill in a gaping hole which appeared in Cromford Hill are hoping the road will be reopened by tomorrow.

The hole, measuring one metre across opened up in the middle of the road opposite the entrance to Tarmac, revealing a massive 60 metre squared cavern beneath the surface.

The damage was reported last Friday at about 1am, and workers from Severn Trent Water quickly discovered that it had been caused by a leaking water pipe.

The road was closed off and vehicles diverted along Via Gellia and through Middleton-by-Wirksworth while repairs were underway, causing traffic chaos.
