VOLUNTEERS are giving up their time to help make the roads around Blackwell safer.
Police have teamed up with 25 trained residents in high-visibility jackets to set up a Community Speed Watch scheme in Hilcote, Blackwell, Newton and Westhouses, in a bid to get motorists to slow down.
Speed radar guns are used to catch vehicles travelling fast and letters are sent to the owners.
If drivers are caught on a third occasion, they are fined.
PCSO Paul Brownlee said: “We have had a fantastic response from the local community and hope the initiative will not only result in a reduction in speeding but will also help educate motorists about local limits and safer driving.”
