MORE than 50 drivers through Stanley Common were caught out a variety of offences on one day this month.

Police, staff from Revenue and Customs and the DVLA checked cars were road-safe, legal and were driving safely.

A total of 32 people were fined for not wearing seatbelts, 10 were caught using their mobile phones and 13 had vehicle defects, along Belper Road on Friday April 20.

A further four were fined for not being in proper control of their vehicles.

DVLA staff checked 1,819 vehicles for MOT, tax, licence and insurance and are taking action against nine registered keepers of untaxed vehicles.

PCSO Matt Lewis said: “It is surprising how many people we found not wearing their seatbelts, such a simple precaution is the difference between life and death.”
