Schools, churches, GP surgeries and businesses are being warned to be on the look out for bogus callers posing as council workers.

Derbyshire County Council has received a number of complaints about men claiming to be from a company employed to repaint road markings.

The conmen have already targeted businesses and community venues in Matlock, Ripley, Duffield, Alfreton and Ashbourne, asking for money to pay for special paint for road markings outside their property.

The scammers produce a fake letter from the county council, which they claim gives them permission to do the work.

Cllr Simon Spencer, deputy leader of the council and cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “We want to warn local people that we would never call door to door asking for money or ask anyone else to do so on our behalf.

“This is not genuine – it is a scam and people should not hand over any money to these conmen.”

Anyone who is approached by these people is urged to call Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 05.

People have been advised to call the police if they feel threatened by the men.
