Charity plea for new volunteers

An Amber Valley-based charity has called for volunteers to provide support for patients discharged from hospitals or care units.

Amber Valley Centre for Voluntary Services (AVCVS), based on the Market Place, has appealed for helpers to give both practical and emotional support over a six-week period.

Volunteers would be expected to provide low-level support to people who have no other support network around them to speed up and ease the transition from hospital to home and prevent re-admittance.

Tasks may include shopping for basic food stuffs, turning on heating, offering a lift home or popping in to their home to check on their well-being.

Pippa Woodbridge, Home from Hospital worker, said: “We are looking for volunteers, specifically from the Belper, Ripley, Heanor or Langley Mill areas to offer support for up to six weeks, with at least weekly visits for supportive, social conversation and ad hoc practical support which will encouraging the individual to care for themselves at home.

“Volunteers can choose the day or time that they are able to provide support. They will be supported by me and will be given training beforehand.

“They will be able to claim back any out of pocket expenses and will have access to additional signposting and services for each individual that they help.

“Volunteers must be over 18 years of age and they will require a DBS (police check) to be carried out prior to them volunteering.

“Each single volunteers’ input will encourage a person’s adjustment to their home environment and participation with the wider community.

“Ongoing health or social care will be provided by other statutory services such as the NHS, to the person alongside this volunteering activity.

“This help will support the NHS and Derbyshire hospitals by removing some of the barriers to lone patients returning and staying home following discharge.”

The Home from Hospital service is funded by the NHS Southern Derbyshire Clinical Commissioning Group.
