NEW MAYOR of Amber Valley, Cllr Ron Ashton was welcomed with open arms to his first civic event in the area.

The Hayes Conference Centre, in Swanwick, celebrated entering its centenary year on Friday with the mayor and mayoress Nancy Ashton in attendance. A celebration service was given by former envoy for the Church of England Terry Waite CBE. The humanitarian famed for his role in negotiating British hostages in the 1980s was followed by a performance by Leicester based Emmanuel Apostolic Choir. Cllr Ashton said: “I would just like to thank the management and staff for such a courteous welcome to the centre. I thought the speech by Mr Waite was remarkable.”

The Hayes, established as a venue for meetings and functions in 1911, also served as a prisoner of war camp in World War Two. An escape tunnel made by German prisoners is shown right.
