work has begun on a new £22 million distribution depot in South Normanton.
The Co-op said the new depot, which will employ around 1,080 staff, and will replace two existing smaller depots in Alfreton and Nottingham, where a total of around 800 people are currently employed.
Work has started to clear the site at the Castlewood Business Park and it is expected to be fully operational during 2013.
Mark Leonard, the Co-op’s head of logistics, said: “The new distribution depot will provide a major boost to the local economy and employment.
“It will not only create a significant number of new jobs locally, but its proximity to our existing depots in the area will allow many staff to transfer to the new site, safeguarding around 740 jobs in the region.”
When finished the new 480,000sq ft facility will service 529 stores in Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire, and will be able to deliver around 68 million cases of groceries per year.
