Heanor’s Portas bid fails - but traders remain determined

HEANOR MARKET PLACE

HEANOR MARKET PLACE

HEANOR has failed in its bid to become one of the ‘Portas’ towns, but despite the blow traders remained in confident mood this week.

The town had applied to take part in the first wave of the Portas Bid, devised by television’s Mary Queen of Shops star Mary Portas. There was money for regeneration on offer as well as advise and support from expert Mary Portas as part of the scheme.

Heanor town centre has suffered from shop closures, but since, there has been a campaign, backed by the Ripley and Heanor News, to Save Heanor Town Centre. Traders have also formed a group and have even taken over running of the town’s market. Mary Portas has herself says a vibrant market is key to the revival of small towns like Heanor.
