Traders across Ripley and Heanor are pulling out all the stops to make this Christmas a cracker by cashing in on the yearly shopping frenzy.

Heanor traders’ Association has delivered more than 8,000 prize draws to homes in the area in a bid to give the expanding market a festive boost.

Residents need only fill in the leaflet and return it to one of the stallholders at either the Friday, Saturday or Monday markets for a chance of winning £100 cash. Chair of the traders association Sarah Acikgoz said: “It’s just to make people aware we have a market on three days a week - and this aims to get people to go and have a look around.”

Card and gift shops are seeing a trading boost and Market Street, Heanor, store Frosts is running a different deal every day in a bid to pull in the punters. Owner Simon Frost, said: “We have a large Christmas present hanging in the front window and every day we are displaying a sample of an item that is on offer – it’s just a way of thanking our customers through advent.”

This year the big electrical sellers are set to be new Playstation 4 and Xbox One consoles. But owner of Fowlers electrical store on Oxford Street, Ripley, David Melbourne, says ‘soundbars’ – high quality speaker systems that link to flatscreen TVs – are flying off the shelves.

He said: “They’re our biggest sellers definitely - they make movies and the music channels really excellent.

“The back end of the year is our best time. We call this a dark night trade - it improves when the clocks go back!”

Butchers are experiencing a trading bubble too as shoppers seek out top turkeys and trimmings. Owner of Walkers on Oxford Street, Ripley, Paul Walker said one customer bought a whopping 20lb turkey. “We are having a fantastic week,” he said. “Turkey is still the main seller, but people tend to be moving on to the boneless breast now rather than the full bird.”
