31 jobs lost at plastics firm

31 jobs have been axed at a door and window manufacturing firm in Nether Heage as part of an ‘ongoing restructuring process.’

Bosses at L.B. Plastics Ltd, based at Heage Firs off Crich Lane, announced the cuts to staff in September.

Nicola Bird, HR and safety manager at the firm, said the job losses consisted of 25 voluntary redundancies.

She said: “The company, as part of ongoing restructuring, had announced on September 2 that there were proposals to reduce the headcount by up to 45 employees but that volunteers would be sought.

“After consultation with the employee vonsultation committee, including representatives of Unite the union, we have been able to reduce this number and ultimately 31 employees, 25 of whom were volunteers, have been made redundant.

The manufacturing firm axed 30 jobs in August 2012 because of tough market conditions.

The Litchfield Group, which owns the business, also closed a door-making factory, Manse Masterdor Ltd, based in Knaresborough, Yorkshire, and created six jobs at their Derwent site.

L.B. Plastics Ltd pioneered the manufacture of PVC windows for the British market.

Earlier this year the Litchfield Group on Ripley Road Ambergate closed with the loss of nine jobs and the premises.

Ms Bird denied that the firm has any current plans to sell off the Nether Heage site.
