Ormiston Enterprise Academy, formerly Bennerley school, could close, it has been exclusively revealed to the Advertiser this morning (Wednesday).

It is understood that parents – who were informed of the proposals today – will be consulted over the next few weeks.

Derbyshire County Councillor Alan Charles revealed the closure plans at a meeting at County Hall today.

Cllr Charles said he was angry at plans, which could see the school merge with Ormiston Ilkeston Academy, formerly Ilkeston school.

The school was taken over by Ormiston, a charitable group, at the same time as Ilkeston School last year, and both have since been run as academies, outside of county council control.

Ormiston had promised at the time of the takeover that the two schools would remain separate and would not be merged.

In a statement released this morning, Ormiston said the move was about falling numbers of students.

“The governing bodies of both academies have been working with Ormiston Academies Trust, the Department for Education and the Education Funding Agency to identify options to address falling budgets, with the students’ best interests in mind,” it read.

“In the Ilkeston area, falling rolls are impacting on all secondary schools and will continue to do so until at least 2016. This means that rolls at both academies are falling quite sharply.

“Falling rolls in the Erewash area are affecting all secondary schools too, and particularly Ilkeston and Enterprise Academies.

“If the numbers of both academies are added together, it makes a predicted total roll of 1080 in September 2013, including post-16 students.

“This gives a base for a much better curriculum provision for learners than the two smaller academies.”

Full details of the proposals – which are set to take effect in September 2014 – will be posted on a dedicated website www.OIAOEA.co.uk.
