TWO police officers have been recognised by the Royal Humane Society for their efforts to save a woman who had gone into a river.

On March 19 last year, police were called to the River Derwent at Milford, near Belper, following reports that a woman was in the water.

PC Lee Sadler was first on the scene and found the woman caught at the top of a weir. When the police helicopter arrived, air observer PC Paul Coles joined PC Sadler in the water, carrying medical equipment to him. They spent 20 minutes trying to resuscitate her, but the woman died in hospital.

They were honooured at a ceremony last Wednesday at police headquarters, Ripley.
