An arty youngster has been given the honour of officially opening a swimming pool after designing the logo for it.

Billy Marsh, of Wirksworth Infant’s School, cut the ribbon at the newly reopened Wirksworth Swimming Pool, after winning the logo competition.

The seven-year-old was one of 36 children from schools in Cromford, Kirk Ireton, Carsington, Hopton and Wirksworth who took part in the competition.

His design of a boy and girl playing happily in the pool won him the chance to go to Wirksworth based design agency Orange Box Design to adapt his original drawing to a professional electronic version.

Paul Carr, of Orange Box Design, said: “I really enjoyed working with Billy on the Wirksworth Swimming Pool logo.

“I explained how to use our professional design software and he easily took to the task.

“The result is the great logo accompanying this article.”

Wirksworth residents took over the running of the pool at the start of this month from Derbyshire Dales District Council and established a charitable business.

Pool manager Glyn Booth said: “I’d like to congratulate Billy, and thank all the children, schools, parents and Orange Box Design for supporting the pool with this competition.

“Billy has done a great job, and we look forward to using the logo.

“The logo marks the start of a new era under community ownership.

“After closing for two weeks for essential refurbishment work, we officially re-opened the pool with Billy Marsh cutting the opening ribbon watched on by his classmates.

“We also have plans for a further celebration during July, when the pool will be 30 years old.”

Wirksworth Swimming Pool is now operating a full programme of activities including parent and baby sessions, toddler and children lessons, aquafit and open swimming.
