A Codnor dad who delivered his baby daughter in a layby on the A38 has spoken of her dramatic arrival into the world.
Tom Rhodes, 30, of Alfreton road, was driving his wife Victoria to the Royal Derby Hospital, but they were forced to abandon their journey and pull up at the side of the A38 when little Georgia Grace decided to make an earlier than expected appearance.
The drama unfolded on Thursday, October 3, as 39-year-old Victoria’s contractions started getting stronger. Tom took the decision to pull the car over and ran to the passenger side. There was not even time to dial 999.
Tom said: “I opened the door and Vicky was just saying ‘She’s out I can feel her head,’ it all went so quickly but I looked and she was there so I put my hand to support her head and she just came out.”
Tom placed Georgia on his wife’s chest and wrapped them both in her dressing gown and his coat before driving to hospital. Both mum and baby were checked over before later going home to Codnor.
Tom added: “It was scary at the time but now it is such a special memory.”
The couple were overjoyed with the arrival after they had been previously suffered six miscarriages.
Georgia‘s proud gran is Mayor of Heanor Heather Longdon.
