Author’s appeal for information on Riddings composer

A FORMER Alfreton man is seeking information on two Riddings musicians for a book he is writing.

Stephen Beet, who lived for forty-five years in Alfreton and now works in Tomsk, Siberia, is appealing for music by Caleb Martin and Ernest Bettison who both lived in Riddings.

Martin’s hymn tune “Pye Hill” was specially written in 1943 for the Pye Hill Male Voice Choir, and it has been performed regularly ever since.

His son, Grenville, who still lives in Riddings, believes his father wrote much more music, but it has all been lost.

The book to be entitled Pye Hill - and other Lost Gems and Forgotten Favourites aims to bring back to life many of the forgotten hymns the last century.
