Plans to make visitors pay to use Amber Valley car parks on Sundays, have been criticised by traders.
Visitors from outside the borough will now be charged to park in all council car parks on Sundays, despite them previously being free.

People who live in the borough with a free parking permit can continue to park for free on Sundays.

Traders
have said the move will make shoppers from outside go elsewhere.

Kashmar Nijjar, owner of The Off Licence in Oxford Street, said: "Our opening times are from 8am to 10pm, so we will definitely be affected.
"People will just start going to bigger stores elsewhere. It really is a bad idea for local trade. Is there really any need to make people pay to park on a Sunday?"

Andrew Breach 22, of new milkshake and smoothies bar Make-a-shake, on Grosvenor Road, said: "Visitors shouldn't have to pay. They will stop coming to Ripley and then everywhere will be forced to close."

The money raised through the new car parking charges will be use for improvements and for general maintenance of council -run the car parks, said a spokesman for the borough council.

Cllr Jack Brown cabinet member for Cleaner Greener, Safer, said: "If we did not charge for the town centre car parks these costs would have to be passed on to the council tax payer or other services cut."

The charges will be same as ones from Monday to Saturday, ranging from 40p for 30 minutes to £1.50 for all day.
