Residents in Codnor have said they do not want the British National Party's annual festival to take place in the area again next year after a weekend of disruption.
Hundreds of people marched from Codnor to protest against the event causing road closures and residents say they were verbally abused by party members as they drove to the festival.

John Lumsden of Codnor Denby Lane said: "We had some verbal abuse
from BNP members as they drove past but I don't think they'll be back here next year.

"Despite what the party says about the attendance we only counted 75 cars in the car park on Saturday.

"If they do try and hold the event here again the residents will do what they did before, object to it and try to stop it taking place."

A retired couple on Codnor Denby Lane who did not wish to be named said they did not want the festival to return to the area next year.

The woman said:"We'd rather it wasn't here next year. The BNP seem to have come out of it all a lot better than the protesters but we don't agree with fascism and would rather the festival take place somewhere else."

Becky Williams, from Notts Stop the BNP, said: "The BNP has chosen for another year to hold the festival in an area where it is not wanted. The people who live in this area are intimidated by the narrow views of the party, they don't represent the views of the majority of the people. It isn't what they want for their families."

Mark Longden, from Unite Against Fascism, said: "The views of the BNP are not credible, they encourage racism and hate and stand for fascist values. It's not right they have been allowed to get a base anywhere which attributes them credibility."

Labour MP for Amber Valley Judy Mallaber said she agreed with the group's right to a peaceful protest.

However on Friday British National Party leader Nick Griffin told The News that the party was grateful for the support of people in the local area that enabled them to stage the event.

Mr Griffin said: "We're very grateful to Alan for letting us hold the event here. We're looking at a number of sites potentially for next year and haven't decided where we want to go but this is a very central location, very convenient, the local people are very supportive and helpful so we may be back, we'll see.

"The Labour party and its supporters are quite entitled to demonstrate and we are entitled to be here with our families enjoying ourselves as well."

John Lumsden,Becky Williams and co.get your facts right!Denby is a large village and we who live at the other end welcome the BNP to Denby. We had to put up with a noisy skatepark for 2 years,24-7, with levels of anti-social behaviour that were similar to the left wing lunatics who tried to ruin the BNP festival. You had no empathy with us!Why on earth you can't put up with decent people, enjoying themselves for just 3 DAYS PER YEAR is a disgrace. The rest of Denby think that you're being totally selfish, given the misery that we had to endure on a daily basis.Come down to our part of Denby and you will find that residents respect the BNP's right to have a party. And before you make sweeping statements about what the rest of us in Denby think, try doing some genuine research! The BNP are welcome in Denby as far as the vast majority of residents here are concerned,we have lost any respect for NIMBY's like yourself and your fellow whingers.Leave the BNP alone, the more you moan about it,the more likely you are to attract thuggery and violence to our village, the likes of which we've never experienced before.[apart from the skatepark].Roll on for next year's festival,Alan Warner and ignore this tiny minority of selfish villagers.Empty vessels make most noise,as the saying goes!

Denbyist, why not find out who invited the protesters to Codnor-Denby Lane and then complained that there was nowhere suitable on the lane for a protest. I'm sure the residents of Denby know that there are some people who having been stirring the issue and scaremongering just for the attention. I bet some were hoping for ANTIFA to turn up and the events of the weekend went exactly as they wanted. All for their own ends to the detriment of the other residents.

Where was John Lumsden last year when at 3am the rock music from Pentrich was as clear as anything with helicopters going to and from the festival.

Anyone in the area who knows Alan and his family too will know exactly why he can't be the Nazi thug he's made out to be or why it was extremely low to attack his property. People like Alan and wife should be given medals and are an example to us all because I wouldn't know if I could cope with what they have to do on a daily basis with no holiday or break.

John Lumsden states that there were BNP members who were being verbally abusive towards him at the BNP's Red, White and Blue family festival. This is were he is miles wide of the mark and probably being deliberately misleading because those outside the venue were associated with likes of the extreme left-wing communists of Antifa, Hope Not Hate and other assorted fragments of the Far Left together with a well known very senior, leading male member of the RMT. It was these types, as he probably well knows who were attempting to forcibly enter the venue to physically attack those present including those with families which included very young children. So the question here is who were hellbent on causing violent trouble, and who were there for peaceful family orientated weekend? Just for his information I was there at this years festival and I always attend the BNP's RWB festival. There's never any trouble just like there was none last year but then maybe his comments have a political bent to them.

I agree with everything said by the residents, as for Nick Griffin saying the local people are very supportive, who has been supportive, the next door neighbours to his land? I dont know of anybody else on this street who has been supportive. And also, I would like to just say that if this festival contibues on our street, then the house prices and the attractiveness of our area are both going to decline, and that means that my inhertence is going to decrease, which will effect my children, and why should my children be affected by the arrogance of a political party who are constantly lying and putting on a front saying they are not racist when every non BNP member in the country knows otherwise. PLease note though I am not moaning about the BNP's behaviour because they were better behaved than the protestors, however it is the fact that the RWB is happening that is attracting this thuggish protestors!

Politics aside, where were you Dominic Tye when our end of Denby was being swamped by yobs virtually every night?Where were you when we saved Denby from a massive environmental disaster by the building of houses on carcinogenically contaminated land that AVBC chose to ignore?Answer-nowhere because you are just a NIMBY and don't care about our community as a whole.Well I and many other residents appreciate the financial help given by the BNP to protect Denby from being ruined by development. All of the selfish lot at your end of our village are totally self-centred.I walk the village regularly with my dog and most people I speak to think highly of the BNP and their commitment to protecting our environment. You and your street need to learn to consider the more important goings-on in Denby.Grow up!

To all you readers out there,as a long time resident in Denby,I can assure you that John Lumsden and his fellow whingers are in a total minority. The majority of Denby residents appreciate the help of the BNP's funds which made it possible for the Cinderhill Planning permission to be quashed in the High Court. We are a team in our part of the village[around 75% of residents in Denby] and welcome the RWB Festival to Denby as a display of gratitude for the help you have given to us.John Lumsden and co. are seen by most residents in Denby as troublemakers and scaremongerers. So now you know the truth from a seasoned Denbyite.
