Pentrich Rock, Blues and Custom Show is cancelled

THE 25th anniversary Pentrich Rock, Blues and Custom Show has been cancelled after a bid for a music and alcohol license was turned down by Amber Valley Borough Council.
The license was refused after objections from Derbyshire police based on fears for public safety at the event, which is traditionally a meeting point for motorbike fans.

At a licensing panel hearing on Thursday, July 10, councillors heard police had received intelligence anticipating violence at the four-day festival. They feared a revenge attack could take place for the death of biker Gerard Tobin last August. Mr Tobin was shot on the M40 in Warwickshire.

At the meeting organisers One Percent Entertainment argued the event had gone ahead without incident for the past 24 years with the help of the police and they believed this year would be no different.

The point was also raised that if a revenge attack was to take place there had been ample opportunity at previous biking events.

One Percent Entertainment issued a statement on it's website saying: "It is with regret that after so much hard work, time and commitment which has been put into this year's event by the RBCS 25 team that we announce the 25th anniversary show will no longer be taking place as advertised."

What a terrible shame. This follows on from the police intervening in the BNP Red White and Blue application.
It seems nowadays if you want any event to be cancelled just threaten violence and the police will abdicate from their responsibility to uphold law and order.
Elf an' safety, you understand.

I cannot understand why the police have opposed this function when for the last few years there have been no issues. This weekend brings fun and life to Ripley and must boost the economy and is the perfect finale for the music festival that is held.
I am disappointed that the police have made this opposition - I thought that we paid our council tax for the police to 'police' and if they are not prepared to put themselves out and do their job because of the 'possibility' of a risk of comeback for an event that happened last year, then what are we payin for. In my job I have to be proactive and not reactive and this should surely apply to the police also in ensuring they covered all eventualities. I have noticed the Bulldog Bash is still going ahead as another police force have weighed everything up and assessed they are able to police this function. What happens next year? Some of us struggle to get time away to enjoy a weekend like this at an affordable cost and put alot of effort in to ensure we can have a good time and this has been took away from us.

strange isn,t it for 24 years the council ect have welcomed the event with open arms even worried a few years ago that the event would move out of the area.it would be a massive loss to this area should the event move else were.24 years of no trouble at all in any ones books should be classed as an exellant record!!what next events will be pushed out of ripley area??

Hi everyone, it is a shame this has been cancelled yet again! But how do we get our money back for the tickets? We are very dissapointed, as it was announced to be held at Catton Hall,so we bought our ticket, then it was cancelled and moved back to Pentrich, but we ended up booking another weekend away, then it was back on so we had to ring and change the dates, now it's cancelled again, so we have booked to go somewhere else next weekend. Hope they don't change their minds again. As it is costing us a small fortune t re-book things..

I've been attending the R&B for almost fifteen years.

I've been on my own, with small groups and with large groups.

Every single time I've attended, it's been fun (even the Mud years), relaxing and most importantly a well run friendly event.

I look forward to the R&B's with as much enthusiasm each year.

Plotting this years Festival, will it / won't it run has been a nightmare to say the least, but we'd finally got our tickets. This year I'd got friends travelling from all over the country to meet me there.

Whilst I appreciate that the police have some form of intelligence (??), I find it a shame that they cannot share this information with us.

One of the great things about this event is that it has always been so very well run. I have never once felt frightened or scared by anybody or any experience there - even walking alone, at four in the morning across dark camping fields, there is always a friendly face offering you a can or helping with directions!!!!

I have never once seen any acts of violence here. Infact, as the years have gone on, several of my friends take their children, who thoroughly enjoy the bike show on Saturday afternoon.

It seems a shame that a one off event of last year, totally unrelated to this event, has spoilt it for 20 odd thousand people on the basis that "something" may happen.

And more to the point - if there are to be reprisals - why Pentrich??? I don't know of any other bike festivals that have been cancelled.

Surely if the intelligence is that good, the event could be policed and the perpetrator actually stopped and arrested? Then the rest of us can enjoy our annual weekend and overdose on bikes, bands and leather.

This is particularly galling when the BNP are allowed to run events, which are surely by their nature much more confrontational and likely to stir up trouble.

I hope that this isn't the start of the end, and the R&B appears back at Pentrich for 2009.

Very upset R&B Fan.
