WORK to widen two bridges which carry the M1 over roads in Pinxton began on Tuesday.
The work, which will last for eight months, is part of a larger scheme to widen the M1 to four lanes between Junction 25 at Sandiacre and Junction 28 at Alfreton.
Work will initially be carried out on the bridge over the B6019 Kirkby Lane with te
mporary traffic lights in place from 25 March until Wednesday April 9. Kirkby Lane will then be fully closed from Thursday April 10 until July 2008.
Work at Brookhill Lane will require temporary traffic lights in April or May for about four weeks while cables and pipes are relocated. Once Kirkby Lane re-opens in July, Brookhill Lane will then close to all traffic until November.
Highways Agency project leader Tony Turton, said: "This work will be a major piece of engineering. Full closures of the roads underneath the bridges will be needed so that we can carry out the work safely.
"The closures will also help us complete the bridge work more quickly. We apologise for any disruption this will cause, but we will do all we can to limit any delays."
During the Kirkby Lane closure traffic will be diverted along the B6019 Town Street, Alfreton Road, Pinxton Lane, Mansfield Road, over Junction 28 of the M1 to the A38 Mansfield Road then continue on the A38 to Sutton Road, Church Street, Church Hill and Pinxton Lane before rejoining Kirkby Lane, or vice versa.
The Brookhill Lane closure diversion will follow the same route as far as the A38 Mansfield Road, then turns into Pinxton Lane before rejoining Brookhill Lane.
