HUNDREDS of job hunters spent hours queuing at a recruitment day at the new £25 million Asda supermarket in the hope of securing work.
The regeneration of the old Heanor Haulage site, on Cromford Road, will create 300 jobs when the store, which is expected to be completed by early November, opens.

The two-day communication event, on Tuesday, July 13, and Wednesday, July 14, at the Surestart Centre, on Bailey Brook Drive, Langley Mill, gave people the chance to learn more about the jobs the company will be offering.

The supermarket giant will then begin to accept job applications on its website or iat ts recruitment centre, on Church Street, Heanor, from July 29.

Richard Jackson, who was overseeing the event and will take on the role of store manager when the development opens, said there had been about 1,200 people referred to the day by the job centre alone.

He said on Tuesday morning: "The queues still haven't eased up yet and we've already seen about 950 people.

"We've had some cracking candidates in so far and it has totally exceeded our expectations.

"It is a £25 million regeneration of Langley Mill so the store is just part of it.

"It will benefit Langley Mill and find jobs for local people."
The area has been hit hard by the closure of some big local firms, including Butterley Engineering in Ripley, which left 90 people out of a job.

Now the hope is that Asda will fill that employment gap and help Langley Mill to thrive once again.

Chairman of Langley Mill Parish Council Anne White said: "It's my personal opinion that the development is a good thing for Langley Mill.
"I am very happy about it because it's regenerating Langley Mill and it's creating a lot of jobs for the area.

"It looked awful down there but now it's all being flattened it looks much better."
Local traders from the Cromford Road area have spoken out against the development, saying that roadworks, including temporary traffic lights, installed to keep pedestrians safe during the build could close their businesses because people are not shopping in the area.

Having worked for the Asda company for many years and opening a new store i feel that Asda is not giving ALL job applicants a real idea about the amount of people that will get a job with them, i know that two thirds of the new colleagues will come from other stores that live local to the new store and not from our area.
Rest asure that the main jobs going will be on nights which is the hardest to fill, but the staff turnover will be high in the first 6 to 8 months so a few openings will happen from this.
The vast amount of people waiting at the open days will not get jobs and i feels its unfair to mislead the local unemployed of our area with this type of publicity stunt?

people from nottingham have already been given jobs at the new asda store and have no local connection to our area who from our local council who supported this store will be asking asda for the number of local residents being offered jobs, (or don't they care) and what will the eighty thousend pound given to the council as part of the planning application be spent on.
