An Olympic flag has been hoisted outside the town hall in Ripley to celebrate London becoming the official Olympic Games host city for 2012.
The flag was raised on Sunday, August 24, at the same time as the closing ceremony was taking place at the Games in Beijing.

Amber Valley councillor Norman Bull said: "We are proud to be part of the national celebrations to mark the handover of the Olympic flag to Great Britain.

"The 2008 games have been instrumental in raising the profile of sport and we hope that this will encourage people in Amber Valley to take part in the many sporting activities on offer across the borough.

"Who knows, we may even see more young sports stars from Amber Valley competing in future Olympic Games."

Denby resident and 2012 Olympic prospect, Sarah Smith was present at the flag raising event.

Sixteen-year-old Sarah has represented England and Great Britain at archery at the European Championship and World Cup and spent a week at the Beijing games after being selected as part of 'Britain's Olympic Ambition 2012' programme.
