A VILLAGE community centre which has been plagued with anti-social behaviour is in line for help after funding was secured for a barrier to stop people getting in.
The car park at Kilburn Miners' Welfare has become a magnet for youths in cars during the last 12 months causing noise and nuisance and posing a risk to other road users as they speed through the village.

Now, thanks to funding from Derbyshire pol
ice, a lockable steel barrier will be installed at the Chapel Street site.

It is hoped the barrier, which will cost around £600, will be in place within a month, after final approval was sought from Amber Valley Borough Council.

Chairman of Kilburn Parish Council Cllr Eric Hetherington said: "You cannot blame the young people really as they have nothing to do. We were all young once but enough is enough.

"There has always been this problem but it has grown steadily worse over the last 12 months.

"Over the past year or so we have seen a number of youths and boy racer types tearing through the village and using the welfare car park as a meeting place causing all sorts of aggravation.

"It was a necessary move because this has been causing a problem for staff at the welfare, people who live near it, and other people around the village when these people are tearing around the roads."

The barrier will be fitted with a combination lock, for which only members of the welfare will have the code.

Pc Mick Shaw from the Belper Safer Neighbourhood Team said: "It was a very small minority of people around the centre who were making some of the members uncomfortable when they were driving down the narrow driveway."
