The country’s oldest man has become the oldest silver surfer.

109-year-old Reg Dean, of Wirksworth, has taken his first tentative steps into the world of computing having never gone online before.

The former reverend lives in Waltham House Extra Care Scheme and was able to try out the technology thanks to a donation to the care home from Leek United Building Society of new computer equipment, which includes a larger than normal screen and keyboard to assist users with poor eyesight, as well as a big ‘tracker ball’ mouse.

Waltham House care manager Chris Betts said: “It’s an established fact that the more active and engaged people are, the better their health and quality of life.

“Leek United’s generous gift will enable our residents to join in with activities that will keep their minds stimulated, for which we’re very grateful.”
