Tonnes of tench added to lake

Anglers in Ripley were buoyed by the arrival of more than 1,000 tench at Butterley Reservoir last week.

The chairman of Ripley and District Angling Club Lol Ellis said increased membership and day ticket sales at the popular nature spot have allowed the club to invest in a restock of fish.

He said: “When ever there is money available it will be spent on improving our flagship venue!”

A further twenty new stands have been purchased and are being installed along the Pentrich Bank on the Swanwick side of the
reservoir.

Further work planned includes a re-excavation of a ditch that runs from Derby Road down to the reservoir. Treasurer of the club Keith Sansam said the ditch constantly overflows and together with the water draining from the adjacent fields, regularly floods the ‘match straight’, the most popular fishing spot.

A new ditch will be dug along the line of the hedge row to catch water from the fields and route it into the reservoir at strategic points. A new water’s edge path is also planned.

Monthly open matches are continuing through the winter. For more details call Pat Woodward on 01773745837.
