Musical gets TMA nomination

Derby LIVE’s musical production of The Go-Between has been nominated for a national theatre award.

The Go-Between, part of Derby LIVE’s produced theatre programme and a co-production with Royal & Derngate, Northampton and West Yorkshire Playhouse, was based on the novel by LP Hartley and was a great success in October 2011.

Described by Dominic Cavendish from The Daily Telegraph as “the finest new musical to have sprung from the regions all year” and awarding the production five stars, The Go-Between was a hit with critics and audiences alike.

Derby LIVE has now been notified that this musical has been recognised as one of the top productions in the UK by being nominated for the prestigious Best Musical Production by the Theatrical Management Association. The Go-Between will be competing against Company, a Sheffield Theatres production, and Sweeney Todd, a Chichester Festival Theatre production.

The Theatrical Management Association recognises theatre excellence in their annual awards held at London’s historic Guildhall, on Sunday October 28.

This award is the second time Derby LIVE have been acknowledged by the Theatrical Management Association, the first was when Peter Ireson, Derby LIVE’s director, won the highly competitive Theatre Manager of the Year award in 2008.

Peter Ireson said: “This announcement comes as Derby LIVE is running high with success during the week that a sold-out Calendar Girls played to over 8,000 people in the Assembly Rooms and Peter Pan became the fastest-selling Derby LIVE pantomime with current figures showing a 30 per cent increase and audiences booking from as far as Northern Ireland, Stirling and the Channel Islands.

“This follows on from other Derby LIVE produced theatre successes such as Robert Lindsay in Onassis, which was a three-week sold out production that transferred to the West End, and The BFG, that was one of the most successful Christmas productions on the Derby Theatre site, selling over 24,000 tickets.”
