Two world premieres are among the highlights of the Night of Festivals, a three-day spectacular free event in the centre of Nottingham on June 21-23.

The final programme details have just been announced for the Night of Festivals 2012, part of the Cultural Olympiad and the London 2012 Festival and includes international music, film, carnival and art.

Michael Nyman, internationally-renowned composer and film maker, will be personally presenting the first-ever screening of his short new film, Witnesses, with a special new score on an outdoor screen in the Old Market Square. Nyman gained worldwide acclaim for his score of the film, The Piano.

Folk in a Box is a one-on-one music performance by Dom Coyote and Emily Barker. Emily won a BAFTA for her score for the BBC series, Wallander. The new, architect-designed box, which is 2m x 2.5 m will be also celebrating its world premiere performance before it goes to Venice Biennale.

David Hill, director of ArtReach, said: “Nottingham will become alive with colour, music, and carnival art on June 21 for three days. It will be a stunning event with Haitian carnival costumes, floats and samba music. This is a chance for East Midlanders to get out and enjoy a world class spectacle on their doorsteps and it’s all free.”

Emily Barker will also be playing on the main stage with Red Clay Halo and Radio 1 DJ, Gilles Peterson will be presenting a special DJ set from the main stage on the last night.

Other events include the first ever Rara procession to ever be held in the UK. Rara is a Haitian tradition that has its roots in the rebellion of the slaves in the Caribbean and has anarchic undertones. There will also be the spectacular Mandinga Arts and Paraiso Samba Carnival with stunning costumes including an 18ft high skeleton.

Throughout the three days, the ArtReach Nanoplex, the world’s smallest moving image gallery, will be showing a series of world films, the 3.5m high Artis Rezistans totem sculpture will be available for viewing outside the Council House, the Big Screen Gallery will be showing artworks and there will be a Storytelling Tent.

David Hill added: ”We can guarantee three days of colour, spectacle, ground breaking art and music and all delivered by some of the best practitioners in the world. It will be a festival that will set Nottingham buzzing.”
