Top play puts down some roots
ARNOLD Wesker’s celebrated play Roots is up and running at Nottingham Playhouse and can be seen there until Saturday, June 2.
To celebrate Arnold Wesker’s 80th birthday, a new co-production of his revolutionary 1959 play Roots, bursting with humour, imagination and compassion, is at the venue.
Arnold Wesker has cemented his place among the great playwrights of his age and has enjoyed something of a renaissance in recent years. Roots is the centre piece of The Wesker Trilogy, and a must-see for all lovers of modern classics.
The kitchen sink drama bubbles from the depths when we join Beatie Bryant as she returns home to her rural roots in Norfolk, bursting with ideas and full of love and admiration for her bright Jewish boyfriend Ronnie.
Her mind is awash with Ronnie’s ideas on politics and culture and she is keen to share them all with her family. Beatie recounts stories about her wonderful life in London and her new found philosophy, desperately hoping her family won’t let her down when Ronnie comes to meet them and not foreseeing the crisis that will challenge her to finally speak for herself.
Giles Croft, artistic director of Nottingham Playhouse, commented: “We are absolutely delighted to be co-producing Roots with Colchester Mercury Theatre Company, in this, Arnold Wesker’s 80th year.
“It is a great play, at the heart of his ground-breaking Trilogy, with a resonance that speaks across the years. We are so pleased that Andrew Breakwell, a long-standing colleague at Nottingham Playhouse, is directing this fine cast, in this important work.”
Andrew Breakwell, director of Roots, when asked what the audience can expect from this production said: “I hope they will find it enthralling and really amusing.
“For some people, hopefully, it may just change some of their perceptions of the world and it may raise some questions about our experiences now in 2012 which were also common to those people in 1959.”
