The plague of the English music festival - rain - failed to dampen the spirits of revellers at Somercotes’ Out the Box Festival.

The third annual music event saw more than 170 acts play over the course of the wet weekend.

But organisers’ decision to replace a main outdoor stage, with a number of marquees proved a success, with Out the Box recording its highest attendance yet.

“It hammered it down on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday while we were trying to set up, but it could have been a lot worse,” said chief organiser Rory Black, of Codnor and bassist in band The Swiines.

“We wanted to set up an artificial beach but it was too wet and the main marquee was meant to be bigger, so we had to abandon that.

“In the end though it all worked out quite well.”

More than 800 festival goers enjoyed acts such as Nottingham six-piece 25 Past the Skank, who triumphed on the I’m Not From London main stage on Saturday night with their brass-infused mix of dub and ska.

Former Trojan Records DJ Earl Gateshead rolled back the years in the dance tent, while more cerebral pleasures were to be found indoors where post-rockers Cheap Jazz mesmerised a small but enthusiastic Saturday night crowd.

Rory, 27, told the News that despite making a small loss, said Out the Box 2013 was definitely on the cards. He said: “I don’t do it for the money. If we were to make anything it would all go straight back into it. I will give it another go next year, but we might change the dates a bit. It seems to be hotter in May nowadays!”
