Chorus heads for the seaside
Derbyshire’s own Barbershop Choir, The Grand Central Chorus, is off to the sea side this week end but there’ll be no buckets and spades just bottles of water and tuning forks.
The British Association of Barbershop is holding its annual Convention at Southport, Lancashire, on May 26 and 27 and Grand Central is competing with 40 other choruses from all over Britain.
“We are hoping to improve on last year’s performance when we won a bronze medal”, said John Grant, the chorus director.
“My guys have worked really hard, have got a good sound and who knows, it may take them all the way. But then there are other choruses who will have the same idea.”
The chorus has recruited a number of new members this year and one of them, Ron Tucker, confirms the hard work. “The attention to detail is phenomenal and so enjoyable. It has certainly broadened my singing horizons and given me a big buzz. I wish I had found Barbershop years ago.’
