WITH the cricket season in full swing, we take a look back 30 years and pictured above is a jubilant Marehay Cricket Club first XI at the end of a very successful 1981 season which saw them crowned Derbyshire County Cricket League division three champions.
Marehay won the title by just six points having accrued 292 points compared to runners-up Scarsdale’s 286 despite both clubs finishing with an identical playing record of 11 wins, seven draws and four defeats over the season.
Sawley finished the campaign in third place with 275 points and Stainsby Hall were fourth on 261.
Stainsby also won the Bayley Cup in what was a very good season for local clubs. Heanor Town CC won division two and Butterley CC second XI took the division seven title.
West Hallam were Premier Division One league champions, ahead of Ockbrook in second and Darley Dale in third.
Twenty years ago the County League consisted of just seven divisions with the great expansions starting to occur in the late 1980’s when the Derby and District League folded.
Give us a shout if you can identify and supply us with the correct names to the faces shown in the Marehay CC picture.
