A GROUP of excited youngsters look on in awe at a production line of Easter eggs in 1986.

However we cannot be sure the shot would have been taken at the Thorntons Somercotes factory, which was opened in 1985 by the Queen herself, or the Belper based factory, which continued to operate until early this century.

Either way what a treat it must have been for the wide-eyed pupils here to see such an array of confectionery all in one go. We cannot be sure which school is taking the tour here, or indeed who the overseeing worker, poised by the conveyor belt to the left of the children, could be. There are another two men looking on to the left. If you have any information on who the people here might be then get in touch using the above details.

The momentous decision by the Thorntons company to purchase a large patch of land in Somercotes was taken in 1982. At the time the company had outgrown its manufacturing plants at Sheffield and Belper.

Construction of the new factory started in 1983.

On March 15, 1985, the new factory was opened by HM the Queen, so it is more than possible this picture from 1986 was taken there.

Last month the company conducted a strategic review, announcing a number of its stores would close.
