A trio of Amber Valley athletes have been shortlisted in the 2014 Derbyshire Sports Awards, sponsored by the University of Derby.

The area is guaranteed to win in the University of Derby Disabled Sportsperson of the Year category, with Heanor’s David Ellis and Swanwick’s Max Foord in contention.

Ellis, 28, has enjoyed a superb past year, becoming World Paratriathlon Champion in London and claiming second place in the European Championships.

Swanwick’s Foord, 18, set a new teen 75kg Raw Bench Press powerlifting world record and was also crowned World, European and British champion.

Shortlisted in the Derby City Council Junior Sportswoman of the Year category, meanwhile, is archer Hollie Smith, who will go up against last year’s winner, swimmer Abbie Wood.

Heanor’s Smith has achieved the qualifying criteria for next year’s World Youth Championships and European Youth Cup.

The 13-year-old also finished as Under-14 National Junior Outdoor Champion with a perfect score and British record of 1,296.

The invitation-only event where the prizes will awarded is to be held at The Roundhouse in Derby on 6th November.
