Madam,

Having just walked from my home to Ripley town centre, I am appalled at the condition of the roads and footpaths along the way.
The streets are littered with discarded food containers, cans, bottles, and dog muck.

There doesn't appear to be any effort made to clean things up.

During the recent bad weather, there was no bin collection on our road, supposedly because of t
he snow, although every other delivery service, from milkmen to taxis and parcel vans, successfully made the effort.

Which brings me to the point of this letter, namely what do we pay the council tax for?

Many years ago, in my birthplace of Sheffield, council workers were to be seen all over the boroughs.

They were sweeping streets, cleaning gulleys, doing road repairs etc.
The town hall had adequate staffing but nothing like the city engineer's department, or the cleansing department, which were responsible for swimming baths, sewage treatment, laundries and wash houses. It was organised, efficient and worked well.

Compare this with what we have now, which is a bloated administration which costs a bomb in salaries and pensions, many of the functions being entirely unnecessary and a waste of time and money.

In short, what we need is more people in overalls and fewer people in suits.
