Madam,
I write in response to your lead article last week and Cllr Lewis Rose's magnanimous apology in respect of the Ombudsman's findings on the Sherwood Hall issue and the district council's handling of it.
I do not wish to go over the details of the case but only to highlight the importance of the findings in terms of local government and the public's perception of it.

As Liberal Democrat members of the council (the main opposition group) we fought
vigorously and vociferously to have the decision of the Conservative-controlled district council to close Sherwood Hall leisure centre at least re-examined in public, so that interested parties could have their say.

This was denied.

Indeed, at the first meeting of the committee when I personally questioned the decision to have the issue discussed as a 'confidential' item, (thus excluding those members of the public present) I was told in no uncertain terms to keep quiet!

As councillors, it is imperative that we keep at the forefront of our minds that we are there to serve the people of Derbyshire Dales.

I personally came into active politics to be honest, straightforward and open.

Let us hope that lessons have indeed been learnt and this kind of thing never happens again – that the council operatives in an open and transparent way at all times, only excluding the public and press when absolutely necessary.

Proper public consultation is vital if we are to carry the public with us.

Cllr Sue Burfoot
Ward Member for Matlock All
Saints
