Madam,

Could I take this opportunity to remind the readers of the Ripley and Heanor News that if they are having work done on their homes or gardens that they need to use a contractor registered by the Environment Agency to take their waste away after the job has been completed.
Unregistered waste carriers are illegally fly-tipping waste across Derbyshire and last year it cost us all around £900,000 to clear it up.

Derbyshire County Council and district and borough councils in Derbyshire are working hard along with the E
nvironment Agency to help track down those responsible but we need the help of local businesses and householders as well.

Before employing someone to take your rubbish away please check with us to make sure they are registered.

If they're not and they go on to dump your rubbish and we trace it back to you then you could face a £5,000 fine.

This could make a cheap garden clean up very expensive indeed.

It's simple to check whether someone is registered. Simply call the Environment Agency helpline on 08708 506 506 or visit our website at www.environment-agency.gov.uk/publicregisters. If everyone did this we would immediately cut fly-tipping across Derbyshire.

You can also help us put a stop to fly-tipping in Derbyshire by calling 08456 058 058 if you come across rubbish that has been dumped or see someone doing it.

Paul Slater
Derbyshire Fly-tipping Project manager
