A Peak District knitting store is to launch an exciting new needlecraft show, with crowds of up to 4,000 enthusiastic knitters expected to attend.
Wye Needlecraft in Bakewell will hold the Stitches Needlecraft Show on August 9 and 10 at the Agricultural Business Centre in the town.

The show will focus purely on needlecraft, with demonstrations from talented knitters and embroiderers including Nicola Hilton from The Royal School of Needlework.

Owner Dean Gooding is hoping to use the show to raise awareness of Wye Needlecraft's Premature Baby Knitting Project, which began in February.

In its first six months, the shop has collected 2,500 garments which have been to sent to over 40 neonatal units across the UK.

Dean said: "We have given out hundreds of printed leaflets with the patterns for these designs which mean we have 60 garments a week arriving to us at Wye Needlecraft ready to be sent to the hospitals.

"Our knitters have been doing some wonderful work for these tiny babies – it has simply snowballed – but we need more," he said.

Event-goers will be able to meet staff from the hospitals who have already benefited from the scheme.

Dean said: "We aim to raise the profile of this worthy cause at the show as so many people are coming.

"We've had many generous donations from customers who don't even knit and that allows others who would like to do more to keep on knitting," he added.

Bakewell mayor Carol Walker will open the show at 9.30am on Saturday. The event will run from 9.30am to 5pm each day, with the retail sections opening at 11am.

Admission is £2 and free to under-14s.
