ROBINSON Crusoe successfully battled ruthless pirates, hungry cannibals and angry gorillas – but couldn't beat Friday's snow and ice in Ashover.
The audience on the opening night of the village's annual pantomime was much smaller than usual as panto-goers avoided the terrible weather.

Director Rosemary Early said: "It's very understandable that numbers were down.

"We heard of one theatre company that went on stage with an audience of just nine."

But over 100 villagers braved the elements on Saturday for a fantastic second performance, which gained rapturous applause from the lively crowd.

Rosemary added: "We were delighted that so many young people joined the team this year and clearly enjoyed themselves immensely. The audiences obviously thought they did a super job."

Rev Ralph Lawrence thanked Rosemary, the cast and helpers for producing a "thoroughly enjoyable" show.
