Water works to stop pipe bursts

Severn Trent has pledged to spend more than £1.3 million to renew and replace pipes in the Ambergate area after a burst pipe affected thousands of homes in Ripley, Swanwick, Alfreton and Somercotes last year

The work will primarily be carried out in fields close to Sawmills off the A610 and the A6 and the company says the work will improve the “security” of supplies.

On November 19 2012 a large water pipe burst in a field near to one of a service reservoir in Fritchley, Belper. Thousands of homes were affected throughout the morning and five schools were closed before the water was restored later in the day,

By improving connections in the network, Severn Trent says that, in the event of a burst, supplies could be rerouted to make sure customers always receive water. Programme manager Nigel McGuinness said: “When complete, the planned work will increase the security of water supply to around 45,000 homes in the area.”

The company is also spending £30 million refurbishing the Ambergate reservoir, above Bullbridge and Fritchley.
