Amber Valley’s MP was left dangling upside down from a Heanor church when he slipped during a 74ft abseil for a worthy cause.

Nigel Mills MP was one of a five-man team to undertake a One Mile Abseil Challenge at St Lawrence’s Church to raise funds for the town’s community fair.

Heanor photographer Jason Hicking said: “Nigel Mills managed to add a little drama to the event by spinning upside down on his third descent –but then recovered and continued with the rest of his runs.

“Each member of the team climbed the 94 steps inside St Lawrence’s Church to the tower roof and then abseiled back down the outside wall.

“If this wasn’t enough they repeated the feat 15 times each - meaning that in total they abseiled over a mile and walked over a mile to break their target.”

The team consisted of Simon Minto, Gary Wells, Dan Pattimore, Kevin Parkinson and Nigel Mills, with safety instructors from Alter Rock Climbing Centre in Derby.

They raised around £1,100 for the community fairs fund.

While the intrepid fundraisers performed their descents, the church itself was packed with stalls from local businesses selling everything form home-made cakes and handmade jewellery to free range eggs. As well as craft stalls and food,

Pupils from Heanor Gate Science College acted as porters and advertised their forthcoming production of the Tempest in the process, while the Full House orchestra’s music added atmosphere.

Any community groups, charities and local residents can come along and have a free stall or space to display information, network, advertise for volunteers and to sell their wares.
