Smoke grenade panic

A Somercotes infant school was evacuated and the Army bomb squad called in after a smoke grenade was found in the car park.

The object was found at Somercotes Infant School on Victoria Street at 8.20am this morning and sparked fears it was a suspect device.

Police officers helped evacuate the school and local houses. The bomb squad arrived at 10am and confirmed it was a smoke grenade.

A spokeswoman for Derbyshire police said: “We were concerned it was an explosive device. As a precaution we called the Army bomb squad.”

All pupils at the Victoria Street site were temporarily transferred to the Nottingham Road building. Six police officers helped put up a 100m cordon around the grenade which was later described as ‘not dangerous’ by the police spokeswoman.
