Proms in the Park will come to town at the weekend as part of the week-long Ripley Music Festival , which this year is celebrating its 11th return.

The Proms event will take place in Crossley Park, Ripley, on Saturday, July 14, and will feature Newstead Brass.

Entry is free to the concert, which starts at 7.30pm. Concert-goers have been advised to dress warmly and bring a blanket and waterproof clothing, given the recent rain.

The event promises to be a specatular one, say the organisers.

The yearly festival has gone from strength-to-strength since it began in 2001 and last year drew crowds of more than 1,000 people who attended events including at Crossley Park for a singalong event with local schools.

Festival co-organiser Mick Wilson is hoping to attract double that figure by the close of events on Sunday, July 15, this year.

He said the event had been getting bigger and better. This time there had been more classical music on show, including events in church and more brass bands.

A diverse bill saw the spirit of the late 70s revived with Punk Night at The Regal on Nottingham Road on Monday, with rockers Psychopathic Tendencies and Dick Venom and the Terrortones performing.

For those with a classical taste, chamber orchestra J26 (Sinfonietta) entertain at All Saints’ Church, Ripley, from n the Wednesday.

As part of the event ROMfest will be staged on Sunday, July 15, and will see six top unsigned bands from around the country take to the stage on Market Place.

On the bill are rock pop purveyors Nicolette Street and the Revs, alongside White Powder Gold, fresh from playing Download. For more on the music festival grab a program at the Holly Bush, Marehay, for £1, or call Mick on 01773 745477.
