Plea to trace family history

Madam,

My mother is going to be 80 soon and wants to know more about her complicated family history.

My mum was born Hazel Eliza Spooner in Bolsover, Derbyshire.

She is looking for relations of her aunt born Mary Spooner in Derby in 1894.

According to the 1911 Census, Mary was working at West Bank Farm, Heage, as a domestic servant.

Mary married John Edward Bollington in 1915 just a few weeks before he went to war.

The marriage was registered in Belper. John Edward was born in 1893 in Crich and he joined the Notts & Derbys regiment. He was discharged on January 25, 1919. They had three children. Only one called Amy lived. John Edward died in 1924 at the age of 31. There were three deaths in as many years.

Mary then re-married William Ault in 1924.

The marriage was registered in Belper.

They had the following children: Betsy Violet, Millicent, Mary and William. I think William is alive and living in the Ripley area. If anyone is connected with the Ault family, my mum would love to hear from them.

Mary had younger brothers: Thomas Spooner, William Spooner (later changes to Anslow – a long story!) and Oliver George Burton.

According to the 1911 Census, at the age of two, William was being brought up with his uncle Robert Swift - a coal miner - and his mother’s sister called Jane Hickling. They are living ‘’near The Green Man, Heage’’.

William and Oliver both served in the Army becoming a captain and sergeant respectively. William served in India and I think was a PoW in Burma.

Oliver was certainly based in Malta in 1938 as he married there.

Thomas settled in Bolsover, Derbyshire, and raised his family there. He died in 1974.

Oliver was born in Arkwright near Chesterfield, Derbyshire, in 1913.
