Time is running out for you to nominate your local community heroes in our 2013 New Year’s Honours Awards.

For the third year running, we are running our awards in a bid to find the area’s top fundraisers, charitable champions and humble heroes – and the deadline to nominate is Thursday January 31.

Last year several readers wrote to us nominating the people they felt had made a real difference in their town or villages.

And this year we are hoping you will do the same by getting in touch with the paper and suggesting the person you would like to see rewarded and the reasons why.

News editor Julie Crouch said: “The nominations have been coming in, but we know there are many more deserving people out there. Make sure you nominate them – don’t leave it to someone else. It’s so easy and quick to nominate too.”

Last year the News rewarded nine community champions at a ceremony at the Field Terrace Community Centre in Ripley.

They ranged from Swanwick man John Steele, who spent 28 years as a caseworker for the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families’ Association (SSAFA) – to Luke Blore, from Somercotes, whose cool actions saving a drowning girl’s life on holiday.Nominations will be accepted from now and through December and January. To nominate you can email us or call with the person’s name and contact details, including a phone number - and include your own contact details so you can tell us all about your choice.
