Ironville’s patriotic pageant in1953

Children at Ironville School are seen here recreating the Queen’s Coronation in 1953 with their very own patriotic pageant.

The picture was brought into us by Janet Corby - nee Balmer - who appears in the picture on the second from the left carrying some kind of sceptre.

Janet said: “What with the Queen’s Jubilee, it seemed like this was an appropriate week to bring this picture into the Ripley and Heanor News.

“I remember the play that we put on in 1953. It was fun!”

Elizabeth II was crowned on June 2, 1953, in a ceremony performed by the Archbishop of Canterbury in Westminster Abbey.
