Heanor school event marks 100th year

The ex-pupils of a Heanor school celebrated its centenary with a church service in Marlpool.

Around 250 Old Heanorians, family and friends met at All Saints’ Church, on September 11, to mark the foundation of Heanor Grammar School with a special service that was devised and led by the Rev’d Canon Joan Whysall.

A reading was given by Ann Burton, an address by Reg Horsley, prayers were led by Jim Sumner and the organist was Trevor Harrison – all old students of the school. Memorial furniture dedicated to former students who lost their lives in the Second World War was used and the Book of Remembrance was also on display.

Sheila Randall, secretary of the Old Heanorians, said: “Old students had travelled from as far afield as Nashville and Ontario to be at this very special service and 130 of the old students later went on to enjoy a centenary reunion lunch at Morley Hayes.”
