Heanor author’s new novel
A Heanor author has published a new crime novel about a detective fighting to clear his name while investigating a powerful conspiracy.
Neal James - pen-name of Philip James - lives on Platts Avenue and ‘Full Marks’, his fifth book, is due to be published on April 4 by Pneuma Springs.
‘Full Marks’ features the struggle of DCI Dennis Marks, a Metropolitan police officer who is teetering on the edge of psychological collapse after a head injury.
Philip, 60, who has been an accountant for 30 years, counts James Patterson, Frank Herbert and Thomas Hardy as literary heroes and enjoys science-fiction.
He said: “I love putting a twist into my stories. It’s a perverse sense of humour I have got.”
Having enjoyed composition at school, Philip finally picked up his pen again in 2006 after being inspired by Derbyshire writer Derek Longden - but received 64 rejection letters from publishers before his first book was accepted. Since then, he has published three novels and an anthology of short stories.
He fits his literary activities into lunch hours, weekends and evenings and says inspiration can strike from any direction: “I get my ideas from absolutely anywhere. I watched a leaf falling from a tree and turned that into a short story called Coles to Newcastle.”
