Health-care hero George is NHS star

A Ripley Hospital porter has won two out of eight categories at an awards ceremony for NHS staff who go the extra mile for their patients.

George Dennis won the Behind the Scenes Award – which recognises those working in non-clinical roles who deliver high quality services to patients or colleagues, or who are innovative in improving services - and the Healthcare Hero Award – which honours those looking after patients directly who go above and beyond what is expected of them.

George, 65, of Selston, said: “I honestly didn’t expect it. The girls got me in the office one day and told me they had nominated me twice. I was hoping to win one but not two!

“I got two very nice glass stars with my name on them. I am going to leave them in reception. It’s not me - it’s a fantastic hospital. We all do our jobs. I’m very proud of the people that are here with us. It’s small but fantastic. My missus wants me to retire - but I don’t want to do it until I’m 70! I enjoy my job.”

George has worked as a porter for the last five years following a career as storeman. He was invalided out of the army following an accident at the age of 25. While there he met his wife Linda and they have been together for 42 years.

He was nominated by colleagues who described him as “the glue that holds the hospital together always going the extra mile to ensure the smooth running of the hospital.”

A spokeswoman said: “He will take time to sit with a patient who is on their own for an appointment, spending a bit of quality time with them and this can make such a difference to their experience.”

The Extra Mile Awards were held at a red-carpet ceremony at Derby’s Roundhouse Thursday June 28. Tracy Allen, chief executive of Derbyshire NHS Trust, said: “We have been overwhelmed by the quality and volume of nominations received. The awards are open to all staff and will recognise those who inspire others and deliver beyond expectations.”
